Through the Vinyl Siding Institute's (VSI's) Certified Installer program, one of Home Visions Inc.'s most experienced professionals, Josh Spence, received thorough training on proper, industry-approved vinyl siding installation techniques.  VSI's certification process involves a combination of classroom training, hands-on instruction and a written test given by a VSI Certified Trainer.  Candidates must have a minimum of one year of experience.

You remember the song your leg bone is connected to your thigh bone and your thigh bone is connected to your hip bone, right?  Well, this song translates nicely to the exterior of your home because the windows are connected to the siding and the siding is connected to the gutters and the gutters are connected to the soffit and the soffit is connected to the roof.  And, guess what - like any fully functional human body - all of these things need to be in tandem with one another for them to provide maximum performance.

Let's take for example, the soffit.  In order to provide the best air flow system for your roof, the overhangs (soffit) of your home should be vented.  Some homes require the need to create air intake slots prior to installing the soffit.  If soffit is on the radar, there are other factors to consider as well concerning the fascia board and the gutters.

Another good example is the siding.  Deciding to replace vinyl siding prior to replacing the windows could be a mistake for several reasons.  Sill trim, j-channel and caulking is used during a siding project around windows and doors.  Installing a new window in new siding will undoubtedly cause the need to disrupt these features designed to seal the areas.

All of these items are connected to one another and although you can absolutely do exterior projects in stages it is best to make wise choices about the order in which you do them.

LOCAL VINYL SIDING PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVES RECERTIFICATION

Washington, DC, July 15th, 2011 -Christopher Hill of Home Visions Inc. in Beltsville, MD has renewed his Certified Installer status by passing a test on the latest vinyl siding application techniques.

Through the Vinyl Siding Institute's (VSI) VSI Certified Installer Program, all Certified Installers have completed a rigorous course of study and examination on the proper installation techniques for vinyl siding, soffit and accessories, as verified by an independent certification firm, Architectural Testing, Inc., and based on the standard ASTM D4756.  All Certified Installers must recertify their status every three years, and Hill has completed the recertification examination proving his continued knowledge of the proper installation techniques.

"The VSI Certified Installer Program was created to recognize top quality vinyl siding installers," said VSI President and CEO Jery Y. Huntley.  "By achieving recertification, Christopher Hill has demonstrated that he continues to display the knowledge and skills to install quality, durable vinyl siding."



The Vinyl Siding Institute, Inc., located in Washington, DC represents manufacturers of vinyl and other polymeric siding and suppliers to the industry.  VSI is the sponsor of the VSI Product Certification Program and the VSI Certified Installer Program. 

Composition Board/ Fiber Cement Board
Composition board or hardboard is planks or sheets of compressed wood fiber and weather resistant adhesive. Hardboard is a good choice in drier areas. The panels can be as long as 16 feet without any gaps. It can be made to look like clapboard if it is cut and applied horizontally.

Fiberboard is a bit more costly than vinyl, but can add a unique aesthetic design that may be unique in your neighborhood since vinyl is much more widely used.  The two most popular products in the marketplace are CertainTeed Fiber Cement and James Hardie.




Vinyl
Vinyl panels are made of polyvinyl chloride and resemble wood. The act much the same way as aluminum but don't dent. If vinyl is scratched, it doesn't need to be painted because vinyl doesn't rust and the color of the vinyl permeates the entire thickness of the panels. Vinyl siding comes in various lengths and widths. The average width of vinyl panels is 6 1/2 inches to 10 inches.

Standard vinyl siding has three components: a nail hem at the top of the panel where the slots are located, the face which is the exposed area of the panel visible when installation is complete, and the butt lock, which is located on the bottom of the panel and locks into the previously installed panel. J- Channels and other accessories can be functional or aesthetic or both. These accents can cover seams, enclose eaves or overhands, and provide and accent to the siding. Today's vinyl siding comes with life-time warranties. Often these warranties are transferable if you sell your home.
